Charles "Pretty Boy" Floyd was a depression-era gangster who was involved in many violent bank robberies, often armed with a machine gun.
So how did this man become viewed in a positive light by the public?
He often destroyed the mortgage papers at the banks he robbed, freeing those people from their debt, since back then this was often the only record of the debt owed. He was known to target banks who were foreclosing on poor farmers. It's no wonder the public often protected him! It is estimated that 30-40 thousand people crowded into the cemetery when he was buried to bid their final good-byes.
